They are evaluating variables, reading the physical states of their colleagues, processing their own unseen triggers, and making split-second choices that dictate the outcome.

They use their empathy as a radar for acute situational awareness, but they do not absorb the panic. If they do, their executive function goes offline, and they drown with the people they are trying to save.

But triage is not limited to medicine. It is a highly demanded human faculty required in boardrooms, tech startups, and family dynamics.

1. Practice Micro-Adversity: You cannot wait for a crisis to learn how to stay calm. Whether it is a cold shower, an intense physical workout, or simply pausing for ten seconds before reacting to an angry email, you are teaching your body how to remain regulated when uncomfortable.

2. Separate the Logic from the Emotion: Empathy is a vital leadership trait, but in a crisis, unregulated empathy is a hindrance. When a crisis hits, use a framework to decouple the facts from the atmospheric panic. Ask yourself: What do I know to be absolutely true right now? By forcing your brain to answer a logical question, you pull blood flow away from the emotional centre (the amygdala) and back into the logical centre (the prefrontal cortex).

3. Close the Stress Loop (Physical Discharge): This is the most critical step. Talking and journaling are powerful mental outlets, but you cannot rationalise a physiological sensation away.
